Memories of Snetterton

Even though it is hidden away in the Norfolk countryside, the Snetterton circuit has become one of the most recognisable venues in British Motorsport. Its fast, technical, and unforgiving layout means the circuit has gained a reputation for producing dramatic racing whenever the BTCC visits. This year, the circuit is the scene to the British Touring Car Championship’s third race weekend, following opening rounds at Donington Park and Brands Hatch.
For EXCELR8 Motorsport, the venue is extra special because it serves as a home race as it is the track that is the closest to the teams Suffolk base.
A quick history of Snetterton
As with many other famous circuits in Britain, we can trace Snetterton’s origins back to the Second World War. Originally, the site was operated as RAF Snetterton Heath, a military airfield used by the US Airforce during the war. In the early 1950’s when the airfield was decommissioned, the perimeter roads were transformed into a racetrack.
Over the years, Snetterton’s layout evolved from being a simple high-speed venue into one of the UK’s most complete circuits. In 2011, the circuit underwent major redevelopment which saw the introduction of the current Snetterton 300 layout, extending the lap by adding a more technical infield section that challenges the driver in new ways by including more technical corners that encourage overtaking and reward precision.
What makes Snetterton particularly special is its variety. Drivers must balance outright speed with technical accuracy across a lap that features long straights, heavy braking zones, and complex corner sequences. The famous Coram corner remains one of the standout challenges in British motorsport, it demands exceptional balance and tyre management skills from the driver if they are to seamlessly carry speed through the long right-hander.
The circuit’s open layout creates unique racing conditions as the wind plays a major role in car balance and braking performance throughout a race weekend. Therefore, adding an unpredictable variable with which teams and drivers must contend with.
Snetterton’s Relationship with the BTCC
Snetterton has played host to the BTCC for decades. Multiple iterations of the championship have raced there consistently delivering entertaining racing thanks to the circuit’s combination of long straights and overtaking opportunities.
Nowadays, the BTCC competes on the Snetterton 300 layout because it provides the best possible balance between speed, technical complexity, and entertainment. The extended layout provides drivers with more opportunities to attack under braking but also places emphasis on tyre preservation and race strategy across a stint.
Heavy braking zones into corners such as Wilson and Agostini put BTCC drivers to the test by placing huge demands on brakes and front tyres, whilst the long back straight encourages slipstream battles that can change the running order within seconds. Meanwhile, the middle sector’s flowing nature means the driver must maintain rhythm and precision to avoid losing momentum across the lap.
The unique challenges Snetterton presents means it often rewards the most complete drivers and teams. Success requires confidence under braking, strong tyre management skills, and the ability to remain consistent throughout constantly changing conditions.
